Shocking and Controversial Advertising

One of Two

My feelings about shocking or controversial advertising is that most of it is very disturbing. My reason for this is because of the fact that on the ad that we had to read there was pictures that some people may take offense to. An example of this might be the picture of a African American woman breastfeeding a white baby. I feel that the writer does make a good argument when he points out that companies like Benetton are no more controversial than talk shows or other advertisements because talk shows and shows such as Jerry Springer are disturbing also. In my opinion I think that Jerry Springer is disturbing because there are random girls that just randomly take off their shirts on live television just to get beads. I do not like shocking or controversial material because most of it is inappropriate for live television due to the fact that a lot of people may be insulted by the images.

Emotional Appeal!

Beautiful Coca Cola Commercial Full Version

Models- In this ad we have many characters, however they are animated characters. There are different types of characters in this ad such as little creatures that have big lips, little snowman that they put in this snow machine to make snow, and many other types of creatures.

Setting- In this ad there is only one setting and it is set to a place that is meant to look kinda like the North Pole. There is snow, slopes and a snow machine.

Copy- 'The Coke side of life." This suggests that the advertisers are trying to sell their product and that they are trying to get their viewers to buy their product.

Sound- There is some sounds in this ad that I cant really describe but they are sound effects rather then an actual song or something.

Story- This ad is telling the story or rather giving us an idea on how Coca Cola is transported from the vending machine to the dispensing of the beverage.

Color- The colors that are in this ad are colors such as: pink, white, blue, green and yellow. The colors affect the mood because if the colors were dark and dreary then it would probably not have the same effect as comforting and calm colors would.

Attention- 2010 Lexus Hybrid Commercial: 'Milestones'
This fullfills the advertisement job because it gets peoples attention by using facts and describing the vehicle.

Image-McDonalds 2010 Olympic Commercial
This fullfills the advertisement job because it is portraying the 2010 Olympics.

Persuade-Rihanna -Cover Girl
This fullfills the advertisement job because it makes the viewer want to buy it and if you have already bought it then you may want to keep buying it.

Promotional Video!

St. Thomas University

The overall appeal that this video had for me was it was interesting because of the fact that it is the college that I am hoping to be going to in the fall. Specifically I liked the fact that it showed people from past years, also the images that was in this video was interesting to watch because they should some activities that they offer for each student and also it told facts about the first week of school. I think that the target audience for this video would have to be high school students like maybe grade 11 or grade 12 students looking for a post-secondary college to attend after they graduate. The messages that the creators were trying to get across was that there school is the best for students looking for a college to go to after they graduate that has small classroom sizes but that they have a big college. This video is informative because the creators are giving information about their school that they are attending. The information that it covers is that their college involves every student that attends this college no matter if you are in your first year, second or third year of schooling. This video is persuasive because it is convincing the studetnts that are looking for a school to attend after they graduate that this is the best school to attend. They use images because they show the different activities that are at their school for each and every student attending their college.

utsbeus

I like the idea that they have on this blog about having links to their friends and families blogs.

The Johnsons

The thing that I liked about this blog was the sign that they had underneath their header it was extremely cute. It said "The love of a Family, Is the Greatest treasure".

Deconstructing a Visual

Album Cover-Toby Mac: Tonight

Content- In this cover the musician(Toby Mac) is being emphasized as he is standing infront of everything in this album and standing out from the objects. There is some use of computer retouching in this album because the color is black and white. Some objects in this album cover that are used are trees, buildings, a moon, stars, clouds, a satalite dish, bridges and roads. This album cover appears to be set in a town or a city.

Composition- In this cover there seems to be some juxaposition but not much: there is just mostly objects such as buildings, satalites and a factory; which in my opinion does not make that much sense why these things are in this cover. There appears to be much details put into this cover such as the buildings and factories giving off smoke.

Camera Distance/Angle- In my opinion the only shot that I can figure out that it would be relatively close to would have to be close-ups suggesting intamacy because of the fact that Toby Mac is much larger then the objects in the background behind him.

Lighting- In this album there is mostly darkness because the albums colors are black and white, but mostly black.

Burn For You
I believe that this song is about how people can be changed when it comes to living for God." I'm a brand new man, I'm a conscious man, I'm a man who's burnin' for you". My final thoughts about this songs lyrics is that it would have to be my most favorite song by Toby Mac. The values and beliefs that the song is expressing would have to be that Christians are suppose to be different in the fact that most of us are on fire for God. "So won't you move me like you used to I want the world to know I burn for you I feel revived again, I am alive again(Burnin' for you) You got me lifted and lifted you lift me up I feel revived again, I'm energized again(Burnin' for you) You got me lifted and lifted you lift me up". The image that the musician is trying to create would have to be that he is trying to get people to see that he is different and does not mind it.

Selling Images and Values!

Blog One of Five

AW commercial

This would have to be the best commercial ever because it is so funny. Another reason why I like this commercial is because of the fact that it is an actual good deal: 2 for $4, Mama burgers. The thing about this commercial that appeals to me the most would have to be the fact that they are makng an advertisement about burgers using helium.

Telus Commercials

I really do not have a commercial that I do not like but some that I find kind of stupid would be some of the telus commercials. The reason why I think that these commercials are kind of stupid is because I do not get what animals have to do with Telus.

Blog two of five

Toys-The TV ads that I would want to air this ad on would probably be a kids commercial or a TV show.
Beer- The TV ads that I would want to air this ad on would probably either be a beer commercial, a commercial that is advertising a party or a TV show that may be using beer products in their show at a party.
Shampoo- The TV ads that I would want to air this ad on would probably have to be a TV show that has a sleepover in it or a commercial that is advertising a brand name of shampoo.

I actually have bought a product that people have said worked but when I bought them they didnt work. My friend told me to buy this product the other day and I bought it and after
I got it home to use it, it didnt work.

Blog three of five

I do not know what type of product that my personal image would fit in an advertisement most effectively.

Blog four of five

While looking around the room all the advertising that I see includes such things as:
-LG name on a cell phone
-the name on a computer lenovo
-The name on the computer DVD
-The name on a shirt that is worn in my homeroom class: AE(american eagle)
-The name on my bookbag: Toronto Maple Leaf(TML)
In my opinion looking at these products and logos I think that there wouldnt be any that most likely would be pitched mainly to males, females, adults and teenagers. I think that out of my list that AE and mostly all of my products are unisex.

Blog five of five
If an alien watched an evening's worth of TV ads, he/she might think that our life on earth was so complicated, "messed up" and probably so much more difficult then theirs was.
If I has to choose one person to speak on behalf of our school before a community group or at a local council meeting, I would choose Krystina Augustine. I chose her because she has a good puvlic speaking voice and does well in front of large groups of people.

Stereotypes in Life and Media!

Gothic

The type of clothing that Gothics wear are black clothing and blazers.

I am not a hundred percent sure what kind of activities that they would be involved in.

The type of music that Gothics would like would be: Atreyu(At least I know I'm a sinner), and Bullet for My Valentine(Waking the Demon).

I do not think that there would be much of a commercial product that would be associated with Gothics.

Society's general attitude toward each group in my opinion would be that they kind of would look down upon them, but in reality when you get to know some of them they are generally nice people.

Geeks

The type of clothing that Geeks would wear are such things as: pants pulled way up, shirt tucked in, big rimmed glasses and sometimes suspenders.

In my opinion the types of activities that Geeks would be most likely to be involved in would be: science fairs, science projects(mandatory for classes), studying alot, being in the library alot, and being known for trying to get all the marks that you possibly can get.

I do not know what type of music that Geeks would listen to.

Commercial products that might be associated with Geeks could be an avertisement of a new product of suspenders or a new pair of jeans.

Society's general attitude toward Geeks probably would not be that negative, but they might just make fun of their appearance.

Druggies

The type of clothing that Druggies wear are just normal cloths like me and you.

In my opinion the type of activities that Druggies might be involved in are just plan activities like me and you would: hanging out with friends, going to parties and etc....

In my opinion the type of music that Druggies might listen to is rock, and rap such as: Eminem and Kevin Rudolf.

Some commercial products that might be associated with Druggies would be such things as needles, bongs and pipes.

In my opinion I do not think that society has a general attitude towards Geeks.

Conclusion:
In my opinion, I think that the media creates these representations by using commercials, images and advertisements using these types of stereotypes in them. Stereotypes are not that important to this school in my opinion because basically everyone knows each other and doesnt judge many people, however they do talk about each other. Also in my life stereotypes do not play that much of an influence.

Gender Portrayal Guidelines!

Joe Boxer

Yes, men and women are represented with equal authority.

No, this ad does not reflect that both men and woman are decision makers when buying these products.

The man is in his boxers, so a person can take it as the man is exploited in this ad or not.

There is sexual exploitation. It is irrelevant associations because the man is used so that people will buy the product. In this case it is advertising Joe Boxer.

One person is not exerting domination or violence over another.

A change that I would suggest that the advertiser should make to this ad is to put a warning up for this ad that it might be disturbing towards some viewers.

I think that this ad got its point across that Joe Boxer products are comfortable and fashionable. I did not find this ad offensive. I found this ad effective because they are trying to get people to believe them that their products are comfortable by saying "With underwear like this, who needs pants."

Wrigley Big Red

I do not think that women and men are represented with equal authority because of the fact that there is a guy laying on a couch and a girl in a half kneeling, half standing position.

I do not think that this ad reflects the idea that both men and women are decision makers when buying products.

I would agree that the women is sexually exploited in this ad because her body is on display for the public in a provocative manner.

The type of sexual exploitation is objectification because this ad is using men and women to sell there products.

One person is not exerting domination or violence over another.

Some changes that I would suggest that the advertiser should make to this ad is that they should make this ad less provocative.

I thought that this ad was a little offensive because of the fact that it is showing a women in a sexual manner. I found this ad appealing more then anything because it is not effective in my opinion because of the way that the ad is advertising their product.

Lee Jeans

I do not think that men and women are represented with equal authority because there is a woman lying in a sexual related manner with hardly no clothes on : short, shorts and a shirt that is showing way more then actually needed.

This ad does not reflect the idea that men and women are both decision makers when buying this product because not very rarely do you see men traveling around with short, short shorts on.

There is a woman being sexually exploited in this ad because her body is on display in a "sexy" matter for the public.

The type of sexual exploitation us irrelevant because the woman's body is being used to advertise Lee Jeans.

No, one person is not exerting domination or violence over another.

Some changes that I would suggest the advertiser should make to this ad is that the woman in this ad should be not shown in such a "sexy" and provocative manner.

I thought that this ad was a little offensive because of the way that it protrayed women. I found this ad appealing more then effective because of the fact the way the woman is in this ad.

Bimbos and Himbos!

Eating disorder
In my opinion I do not agree with this video because this girl thinks that she is fat when really she is no bigger then a rake. But in her eyes she thinks that she is still fat and in my opinion I think that people that are like this really need to get help for themselves.

I Wont Cheat
In my opinion I do not agree with these things going on in this video because I do not think that people and guys need to be taking these drugs to do good in anything such as sports. In my opinion people that take drugs like these in a way are cheating.

I do not feel pressured to conform to a certain image because I do not feel like I have to be. I feel that no one should have to feel like this girl, that they are fat and that they need to be skinny. I also feel that no one should be pressured into taking drugs such as steroids.

Media and Gender!

*Some fowl content/language in video below!*

You spilled my coffee!
Superority and Domination- women are sometimes shown as below men and men are in control.
This video is referring to men as they are in control of women. In this video a waitress is pouring a mans coffee and acciedently spills some. The man then reacts in a crude way calling her names and grapping her by the throat, while pouring the hot coffee on her. This commercial is advertising that "you wouldn't do this here so why do it at home?" This is a commercial that can be referred to many other commercials advertising anti- domestic violence.

Only Want Sex!
Irrelevant Sexualization of Women and Girls- Advertisers use sex to sell products, even when sex is not involved in the product.
This video is advertising that some males when seeing or even hearing the word sex respond to it. As seen in this video one is seen on the womans shirton the back and while she is running with this shirt on there is any amount of guys following her. When she stops is when you actually see the rest ot what the shirt says and it simply says one thing " men only want sex!" The woman is advertising orange juice and this has nothing to do with what is written on the back of her shirt but it is still portrayed that it does until the end of the commercial.

Part 2

In my opinion I agree that there is too much violence in movies and television shows. Mom and me use to watch Jerry Springer and now I find that there is way too much violence in it so thats why I stopped watching it. If there wasn't woman and girls traveling around topless then they are either hitting each other or fighting about something stupid. An example of this would be if a guy wasnt the father of the baby of his ex girlfriend then the ex would be fighting either with the male or his new girlfriend.

Part 1- Sexual Images and Violence!

Disturbing Pics

In my opinion I do not agree with commercials referring to sexual acts in which some of these elements that are found in these commercials and pictures can be found in pornography. I think this because of the fact that there might be little eyes watching television when this commercials come up. Also there is people that probably do not want to see these types of commercials, and I am one of them and that is why I do not watch television that much because of some of the commercials that come up every once in awhile. I think that these types of commercials and things are very inappropriate because they should not be on television. I my opinion I think that these commercials and pictures should be on a separate television station and that they should have their own sites on the computer and that the only way that people can view these things is if they have an account or if it is on the television then the only way that people should be able to watch them is if they pay for them. When I am talking about things being on a separate station I am referring to commercials as well because I know that you can already pay for pornography and things like that on television, and these stations should be blocked so that little eyes can not see them. I think that some advertisers use some of these elements because they are basically desperate to sell their products to viewers watching.

Violence and Entertainment!

Sleeping with the enemy. I chose this movie because abuse is a type of violence. Historically, stories have contained a hero and a villian and any conflict between them is resolved by violence.

Anti-Spousal Abuse Ad from 1900s(kid on stairs). I chose this commercial because it is also considered violence, although it is not in a movie form, it is trying to get people to take a stand and do something about abusive relationships and situations. In my opinion I am not to sure on what this one is but it could possibly be Production companies want a good return on their multi-million dollar investments.

In my opinion violence can make a good movie sometimes, but most of the time it depends on the type of movie it is. I think that some movies can have way to much violence in them but yet again it all depends on the type of movie that it is. Well in some movies the violence can be necessary but again in some movies it can be realistic, but most of the time its necessary. Yes, it can be justified when considering the storyboard. I do not think that an effective action or fast-paced film could be produced without violence because I do not think that it would be the same as an actual action movie, I think that it would be a little boring.

My Favorite Media!

I would have to say that my favorite media would either be some country music or christian music.

I chose country music because some of the country music that I listen to has a meaning to it, whether it be a "catchy" song or a song that will stay in my heart because of a close meaning to me. Some people might not like this type of music because of the fact that a lot of country music is either talking about having sex, drinking/partying and doing drugs. But it all depends on what type of country you listen to.

I chose christian music because this type of music will always be in my heart due to the fact of my religion and because most of the songs are heart warming to me and they mean a lot more then any other music that I listen to.Some people might not like this type of music because I know that most of my friends prefer listening to their own kind of music and not the kind that I listen to.

Conflict Resolution!

Step Up

Tyler is a male who finally decides after so many years of fighting for what he wanted in life, knows what he wants and is determined to get it. Nora is a female who is use to getting what she wants and usually works hard for what she wants and she is an amazing dancer. When Tyler comes along and her partner sprains his foot and he can no longer be her partner she has to find a partner fast and in a short amount of time. This is where Tyler comes into the picture. But the conflict that I am going to talk about is when Nora and Tyler get into an arguement and Tyler quits on Nora and she has to do the play all by herself. This conflict was resolved at the end of the movie by Tyler coming back to Nora and showing up right before she is going to go on stage to perform. He basically tells her that he is fighting for something that he actually wants for the first time in his life and that he was extremely sorry for bailing on her when she needed him the most. He also tells her that he is realizing what is important to him the most and that is his future and his schooling. There was no violence used in this conflict but there was violence used in another conflict; which was when Skinny, Tyler's friend's brother, stole PJ's truck to look cool and ended up paying dearly for his actions. The charcters that were mostly portrayed in using violence was people that was so used to seeing their problems and situations being solved by this way of manner, and who was brought up this way by either their parentsor whoever had raised them.

Characters in Television!

New Moon

The main characters names in this movie is Bella Swan(Kristen Stewart) and Edward Cullen(Robert Pattinson). The main characters are female and male. They are both white and i am not sure what their culture is. Their jobs in this movie is: Bella plays the girlfriend of the vampire(Edward) and who goes into a whole depression because Edward leaves her; Edward plays the vampire that thinks that he is no good for Bella, so he does the only thing that he thinks will save him and help her, he leaves. Robert Pattinson is 23(born May 13, 1986) and Kristen Stewart is 20(born April 9,1990). The kind of role that Bella Swan plays in this movie is a hero because she saved Edward from trying to kill himself; Edward is considered a hero because he is one of the "good" vampires compared to the other vampires.

Commercials!

One advertisement that I choose was the advertisement advertising Covergirl make up. The actor that plays in this advertisement is Drew Barrymore. This advertisement is advertising the new Smoky Shadow Blast by Loreal. Drew Barrymore is a white woman who acts in many movies and she looks sort of young.

The second advertisement that I choose is the advertisement advertising Lady Speed Stick-24/7. The person that acts in this commercial is Maria Sharapova. Maria Sharapova is a white woman who looks young.

The third advertisement that I choose is the advertisement advertising Snickers. The person that acts in this commercial is Betty White. Betty White looks extremely old but when she takes a bite of the snickers bar she becomes young.

My Favorite Personalities!

Tye Tribbett

I choose Tye Tribbett because I love his singing. He is crazy and is so on fire for god, that it is a good craziness. He was born in January 26,1977 in Camden, New Jersey. He is an American Gospel Singer, a keyboardist, a song writer, and a choir director. He is known as Tye Tribbett and G.A.(short for Great Anointing), and is married to Shante Tribbett which is also part of G.A. Mostly all of his family is part of the music business; his sister, DeMarist, and his brother, Thaddeus, is part of the band called "Soundcheck".

Kirk Franklin and Da T.R.U.T.H

I choose these two christian rappers/singers because these are my two favorite rappers/singers. They always have good songs and they are so energetic. The Christian rapper who goes by Da T.R.U.T.H is Emanuel Lee Lambert, Jr. who was born on December 15,1976, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Kirk Franklin is a grammy award winning american singer who blends hip hop and RnB with gospel elements. Kiirk Dwayne Franklin was born January 26,1970, in Fort Worth, Texas.

Dear John

This movie is based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks. This movie is produced by Lasse Hallstrom. The purpose of the text is that love can still be there know matter where you are. The intended target audience would be women because its a love story. The ways that the text tells a story is none because there is no text. Yes this movie does connect with a larger story because love can find anyone and sometimes your relationship may have its ups and its downs, an example would be in the movie John is in the special forces and later on in their relationship he has to go back. The characters in this movie are realistic because every girl finds her true love in life and everything is going good but then he has to leave and she is heartbroken now.

PSA

The overall appeal that the video had for me was that it caught your attention because it uses characters and I thought that this PSA was quite funny. The things that I specifically liked about this PSA was that it uses the Ninja Turtles to demonstrate to kids that drugs are bad for you. I think that the target audience for this PSA is children because in the video they use kids and the Ninja Turtles are telling them not to do drugs. This video is informative by basically saying that children should no how to say no to drugs and not to give into peer pressure. This video is persuasive because it uses cartoon to characters to get the point across and it is a good way to get children to listen to what the message is.

Blog Critique!

The first blog that I chose was Mom Spark. My opinion on this blog was that it was interesting to read the artciles that were posted. I also found the choice of titles for the articles interesting. I also thought that this blog had much thought put into it also. My second choice was The Housewife Diaries. My opinion on this blog was that it was interesting for the "author" to tell her stories about herself and her lifestyles. I also thought that this persons blog was creative and it seems to me that much thought was put into this.

Media Literacy!

Media Literacy basically means how do we critically learn to read the media( such as a book), and also how do we produce it, it is also about creating and accessing it. Basically what I got from the first video is that media(media literacy)plays an important role in our lives and our lifestyles. Jobs such as journalists, parents, teachers, independent media makers and public health advocates maximize the effects of the second trend; towards independence, localism, diversity and challenge the first trend which is the trend towards corprite power, centralization, consalidation and profit seeking.
There is 5 basic questions about media literacy:
1. Who sent the message?
2. What techniques are used to attract my attention?
3.How might other people understand this message?
4.What values are represented in or omitted from this message?
5.Why was this message sent?
